I've always wanted to understand his reasons... why he became a traitor, why he turned. Complex characters fascinate me (Snape is another good example). I'd also like to give Peter a chance to explain. I'd like to understand him better.
What exactly turned me to liking Peter? Well, "liking" is a complex word when discussing about Peter. I don't like all what he'd done. But I find him sympathetic. I think that happened after reading GoF. Not PoA. Because in PoA he was at first a martyr hero (a false story) and then he became an object of Sirius and Remus's wrath. It was so black-and-white. Or was it...? On the second thought, he was a very sympatethic, although anxious rat. But in GoF I really found his character interesting. He was in a great distress, too. And then I realised that poor Wormtail really hadn't any choices left but to go back to Voldemort after what he had done. I started to pity him, or feel compassion, even though he had done those horrible deeds. He was so alone, patiently "babysitting" Voldemort, who was using him cruelly. What went wrong in Peter's life that he had to find himself in such a situation? When it started to go wrong? So I think it was reading GoF that made me think Peter in a more sympathetic way, curiously studying his character. I can't think him downright evil (I think no one is purely evil), and not insane either. I'd like to understand him better. Although it's a cliche, he reminds me of Gollum in Lord Of The Rings |
