See, and that's the truly lovely thing about JKR's writing -- there really isn't such a thing as black and white. Look at Snape -- the reader sees him as evil right up to when we learn that he was actually a double agent for Dumbledore at the end. There's no such thing as black and white in the HP world -- it's all shades of gray -- and of course, Peter Pettigrew is no different.
Which I think it what attracted me to him in the first place. Figure Peter's got some sort of shade of gray that JKR hasn't clued us in on (maybe June 21 we'll know?). And all these Peter-centric fics of ours are just a way of exploring what happened with him. Because if Peter -- who must have started out good at some point -- no one, not even a Malfoy, is born evil -- went bad, then there's a reasonable chance one of us might too. And better to know how, in order to prevent, then let it be a mystery for all time... |

You cannot ignore Peter Pettigrew. I'm sorry if you don't like him -- I'm sorry if you think he's the scum of the earth and a rotten excuse of a human being, and I'm sorry if you can't see why anyone in their right mind would want to defend him. But all the same, Peter was there. Peter was a Marauder; James and Lily obviously trusted him enough to make him their Secret Keeper; Sirius trusted him enough to let him protect his best friend and godson.
So why do you say that you won't write Peter into this fic? Without Peter, you're missing out on a great opportunity for dramatic tension. You're also creating a problem for your ending, as Peter did have a great deal to do with the Potters' deaths. How will you explain that James and Lily suddenly trust their very lives to a person they claim is their best friend -- but has never so much as figured into a cameo appearance in your version of their lives? It's fine if you want to put Peter into this fic, and make him a minor, weak, and stupid character. I won't agree with your assesment, but at least you will be acknowledging that Peter EXISTED. Otherwise, what you are doing is akin to sticking your head into the sand because you don't like the view. I say to that, TOUGH. You're not allowed to chop down a tree because it spoils the skyline. You can't remove Peter from the world because you don't like him. |
